Onboarding experiences under the microscope

The microscope being growth.design frameworks.

onboarding redesign design audit product psychology

What is growth.design?

I have always been the lone design wolf in all the teams I have worked with so far. Outside help was of the utmost importance.

growth.design is one of the key resources in my arsenal. On top of their unique case studies, the co-founders, Dan and Louis-Xavier, also share their deep knowledge in their masterclass, where they equip you with very practical frameworks on how to design for the human mind by remaining ethical.

In the slides below, I have used their psych framework alongside different insights (psychological, ux, data, etc.) to explain what is potentially happening from the user’s perspective on each step of the journey.

Psych acts as energy level and it is shaped by two forces Psych = M·A: Motivation (the willpower to act) and Ability (the capacity to act). Every interaction on screen will add to or remove from it. I started each analysis at an average of 40 psych since the users are coming from different backgrounds.

Onboarding as a caregiver at Paulina24

Paulina24 connects caregivers with families seeking 24h elder care in Germany, offering better-paying jobs than traditional agencies.

Caregivers come with very different prior experiences that shape how they see Paulina24:

Optimistic and hopeful
Skeptical, but curious
Better pay and working conditions
False promises, will not trust easily
Positive word of mouth
Bad reviews online
Reliable, modern agency
Another chaotic agency

It is crucial that the onboarding journey keeps them motivated and makes it as easy as possible to take action.

Motivation

  • Keep a professional, but friendly tone
  • Ask only relevant questions to find the best match
  • Reward them with first results

Ability

  • Keep it short and familiar
  • Low friction and cognitive load
  • Mobile-first design
